1. New Dota challenger Rise of Immortals goes into open beta

Petroglyph Games' Rise of Immortals has entered into an open beta, meaning that you can now try out this new entry into the growing Defense of the Ancients-based (sometimes called Moba) genre for yourself. Register an account on the official site, download the game client and you're good to play. Winning, on the other hand, will probably take longer than that, as these games aren't known for their smooth learning curves, especially if you're not familiar with the premise.

We got to see this one back at GDC, and played it during the closed beta period. The game does bring some innovations to the genre, including a player-level progression system and a map that's designed specifically for a three-person PvE experience. Unfortunately, the polish just isn't there yet, especially when compared to more established titles in the genre like the very popular League of Legends.

But then again, that's what a beta's for, right? No word on how long the beta will last, but given that it was supposed to start even earlier this spring, you can guess it'll probably be around as long as it needs to be.

  2. Mojang’s Scrolls to follow Minecraft’s piecemeal release strategy

Mojang Specifications' Daniel Kaplan confirmed that the studios' next game, Scrolls, will follow the same procedural release plan as its current mega-hit, Minecraft. Kaplan explained to attendees at the Barcelona-based event Gamelab 2011 that the game will be released "very early," and will be continually patched and updated until finished. Hey, if there's anything we love more than magic-infused parchment, it's instant gratification.

Kaplan also outlined the future of the development studio, explaining that Scrolls is being developed by a five-person team -- a sizable increase over Minecraft, which was "by and large created by one developer, Markus Persson." He also revealed the studio is considering becoming a publisher for other, smaller indie developers, which of course means that Mojang is totally selling out, or something.

  3. Hellgate open beta starts next Thursday

Hellgate, T3 Entertainment and HanBitSoft's free-to-play relaunch of Flagship Studios doomed MMO, will open up its doors to any and all interested evil-smiting parties starting next week. The game's public beta will launch in North America and Europe next Thursday, June 30, giving new volunteers the opportunity to try out the beta's limited suite of features. You can sign up to try out the relaunched title on the official Hellgate website.

According to a HanBitSoft press release, the arrival of the open beta will bring two new game modes to the client: A PvP arena, and the "Cow Room," which tasks players with surviving waves of attacking zombies -- and notably lacks any bovine aggressors. You may be wondering, "Why is called the Cow Room?" It's almost worth checking out the beta to find out.

  4. Ghost Recon: Future Soldier beta deploys January 2012

Aspiring future soldiers will get their first taste of playing as "F-16s on legs" in Ubisoft's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier when the game's beta rolls out in January. " We know you have been asking about the beta," the publisher wrote in a tweet Monday, before saying, " We're excited to announce that the MP beta will be launching in January 2012."

Ubisoft had previously said a beta would launch this summer, but any hope of that happening was pretty much dashed when the game itself was delayed into 2012 aka the future.
